Member of the Month - June 2021

Congratulations, Matt!

Matt is our June Member of the Month! We love having him and his pup, Goose, in the gym. Here's why our coaches love having him in CrossFit classes:

Matt is awesome! He comes in with a positive attitude and works hard in and out of class to improve his skills and lifting technique. Bonus points for a great dog and double bonus points for being a whiskey connoisseur.

I’ve had the chance to coach Matt from the moment he stepped out of foundations. He’s made fantastic progress and it’s because of his attention to his own movements, asking the appropriate questions, and being humble enough to not overdo the weights. He’s also been a joy to talk to in and out of class with his awesome personality and attitude. Keep it up Matt!!

Overall awesome dude! Enjoyable to be around. He’s one of those members you get excited to Coach/ workout with. Always comes in with a positive attitude ready to tackle any workout. Plus he has his cool doggo, Goose.

Matt and his handsome boy, Goose, are great additions to the PUSH community. He comes in every class with a smile on his face eager to learn and get faster and stronger. He’s improved so much in the time he’s been a member and looking forward to seeing what he accomplishes next!

Matt is one of those members that says hi to everyone who walks in and always has a positive attitude. He is always looking for feedback to improve as he wants to get better in the right way. That is going to take him far in terms of ability and improvement! He also brings his trusty sidekick, Goose, who is such a good gym dog!

Matt is always working on something! He is very coachable and will continue working at a skill over and over again trying to improve. He’s made huge gains in bodyweight skills and lifting because of it. I love having him and his will-try attitude in class. Goose’s Baby Yoda ears just make me gush every time I see him.

Now, let's get to know our June Member of the Month!

When did you start CrossFit? I started CrossFit at PUSH511 in October of 2020, though I’ve dabbled at a couple gyms in the past.

What's your fitness background? My fitness background is pretty varied, playing sports like gymnastics, baseball, track and field, and soccer (playing soccer into college). I’ve always been more motivated in group-based workouts like HIIT and CrossFit than a traditional gym.

What's your favorite CrossFit movement? Power cleans!

What's your least favorite movement? The rower. That thing hates short people. Let’s boycott??

What do you do for work? I work at Morgan Stanley in client operations, managing different accounts. I’ve been in finance for just under 2 years now.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family. Hi, I’m Matt! I’m originally from here in Baltimore, have 3 siblings scattered across the country, and am proud owner of the bestest boy, Goose. My younger sister lives in Hartford County, older sister is in Seattle, and oldest brother lives in Portland, ME. I moved back from Phoenix, AZ after 8 years in late 2017 after getting my MBA, and have absolutely loved living in Canton. I enjoy spending my free time out with friends participating in whiskey tastings and playing team sports through Volo, or being by myself playing video games. Depends on the mood.

Tell us something we don’t know about you! I studied music in undergrad, emphasizing in vocal performance. I had to sing classically in 4 languages for my senior recital. I also participated in general choir, jazz choir, jazz band, and several musical theater productions.

How has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym? In short, it helps me manage anxiety, get better sleep, and gain more confidence. Being consistent at the gym has also helped me be more diligent with my diet at home.

What do you enjoy most about PUSH? I have really enjoyed meeting all the amazing members, coaches, and dogs. I’ve gotten so much support from everyone, and am grateful for all the people who field my hundreds of questions. This community is one of the best I’ve found in any gym I’ve been a part of. Also, Goose enjoys all the extra pets.

What tips would you offer someone who is just getting started with working out? Try not to compare yourself with others too much. Each person has their own fitness journey, so listen to your body and coaches to find out yours.

What's your favorite song to get pumped up for workouts? This is weird, but The Confrontation in the Les Mis soundtrack.

What's your favorite restaurant? Bmore Licks.

Who's your hero (real or fictional)? More of a role model, but Michael Bublé. He’s my karaoke go-to.

What does your frequently used emoji tab look like? Pinched Finders Emojiis the only emoji I usePinched Finders Emoji

Words to live by or favorite quote? “Comparison is the thief of joy – Ted Roosevelt” - Keith O’Neill

What's your favorite travel spot? Havasupai Indian Reservation, AZ. Camping in the Grand Canyon is like nothing else.

If you could win an Olympic gold medal for any sport, real or fake, what would it be? Pole vaulting.

What's your hidden talent? I really enjoy baking and my cookies are pretty delicious but try not to do it too often because I make things that are way too bad for you.
