Story: I’m an ex college athlete who used to be in shape. Over the years, life and injuries got in the way of my health. I’ve had 5 knee operations and ballooned up to 290lbs. My New Year’s Resolution in 2013 was to lose one pound a week for the entire year. After seeing quite a few friends have huge results from Crossfit, I thought I’d give it a shot. I emailed Push511 in January of 2013 to see how I should get started. I figured I better get in shape before starting such a difficult routine. Ardyth disagreed and told me just to try it. I could scale anything I couldn’t do. Well, I scaled everything for quite some time. The workouts were great and I lost a few pounds. Then there was the “Whole 30 Challenge.” I didn’t expect to find a change in diet along with my gym routine, but that’s exactly what the Whole 30 diet did for me. I was losing about a pound every other day. It was hard, but it was only 30 days and I figured I could do anything for 30 days. Once it was over I went back to a normal diet, while working out 3-4 times a week. That kept the weight off and I never gained it back. There were two more Whole 30 challenges in 2013 that I participated in, and I dropped even more weight. By consistently showing up every week and watching what I ate, I was able to drop 65 lbs by the end of November. I actually got down to 223lbs which was below my college playing weight. I was hoping that I could get below 250 when I started and never in my wildest dreams thought I could get back to the 220’s! Since then, I’ve put on about 10lbs but have been able to stay in the 235lb range by consistently going to our box and working out 3-4 times a week. At 42 I’m healthier than I ever thought possible at this age and have met so many great people at Push which makes it so easy to continue to come back again and again. Thank you all so much! I couldn’t be happier!
Tell us a little bit about you and your family: My family is the entire reason why I got started in Crossfit. My wife Erika, has consistently worked out by running and doing yoga ever since I met her. I, on the other hand have been very inconsistent with my health. In July of 2012, we were blessed by having our first child. We were both over 40 when Tyler was born. This was my wake up call. My parents who are in their 70’s both suffer with many ailments and it’s hard for them to get around. It’s heart breaking and I wish we could turn back time and help them get healthier in their later years. Since I’m an older 1st time dad, I began to realize how difficult it would be for me to play with Tyler when I was in my 50’s at the rate I was going. That kick started this process and now I’m ready for whatever Tyler throws at me! Because of my results, Erika has decided to join CrossFit as well and now she’s hooked too!
Occupation: Critical Care Territory Sales Manager for Maquet
Hobbies/Interests:Playing or watching all types of sports. Anything competitive. Spending time with my family and eating.
Words to live by or Favorite Quote: "It’s never too late to become what you might have been!“
Tell us something we don’t know about you: I’m originally from New Jersey. I came to Maryland because I was recruited to play baseball and football at Towson. Once I came I never left.
What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout: I’m in much worse shape than I even thought. My 1st WOD was completely different than what everyone else was doing, because I couldn’t do any of it. It was humbling, but I knew there would be a light at the end of the tunnel if I continued to show up.
What is your fitness background: I played high school and college sports and continued to play after college in rec leagues ( baseball, softball, football, basketball, volleyball)
What’s your favorite part of CrossFit: Meeting a whole new group of friends that are like minded and positive. I thought I would get in shape doing CrossFit but it’s been so much more than that.
Fill in the Blank:
I like… spending time with family and friends. Meeting new people and as my wife likes to say being aggressively friendly!
I eat… without counting calories and without feeling guilty. Eat what you enjoy in moderation and make good choices the rest of the time.
I do… try to learn from my mistakes. Life comes with many challenges and if you haven’t failed you haven’t tried and you won’t learn and grow.
I am… a husband, dad, friend, brother, son, sales jockey, weekend amateur athlete and wanna be comedian.
Favorite Cheat Meal… Pizza!! Thin crust, deep dish, sicilian. Whatever! I love pizza!
Favorite Real-Life Hero/Athlete…My parents. They always supported me in whatever I chose to do and were always there no matter where or what the situation.
